Many professionals are told:
“Be more visible.”
But visibility without strategy can sometimes turn into exposure.
More visibility can mean:
• more scrutiny
• more expectations
• more involvement in unstable dynamics
The goal isn’t visibility alone.
It’s controlled visibility.
Example from my career
Early in my career, I took on a highly visible role in a complex employee relations situation.
While it increased my exposure to leadership, it also pulled me into unresolved conflicts that weren’t clearly structured.
That experience taught me that visibility should be intentional and aligned with influence—not just opportunity.
